The first question you should ask yourself is "What do I like to do?". Most home business entrepreneurs are coaxed into doing something not within their talents because of the income potential.  What they usually don't think about is how much hard work and time is involved in achieving the same income level promised by the business opportunity. There are a lot of legitimate home businesses today, but they require a lot of effort to eventually succeed with them.  If you don't enjoy what you're doing, chances are you won't stick with it.

I started looking for a home business while pregnant with my first daughter who is now age seven.  I tried two businesses in hopes of earning a "substantial" income.  Neither business produced the income promised, but that didn't mean they weren't legitimate business ventures.  They just were not the ones for me.  I was searching for another when a friend approached me with a business opportunity.  It was selling products for a major cosmetics company.  Many  woman were succeeding at this business and I could see the potential to be with this company for a long time. There was just one thing, I knew absolutely nothing about selling products, let alone did I wear much make-up, and to tell you the truth I really wanted my own company.  Something inside said "I really don't think I can pull this off".  Yet, I paid my money for the kit and went ahead with it anyway. To shorten the story, I stuck with it for about a year, the product pretty much sold itself.  But, I realized in order to get where I wanted to go in the company, I would have to invest more money and direct a group of people under me.  This was not at all what I wanted to do.  I knew I had to get out before I disappointed not only myself, but others who may follow me.  After this one, I learned a great lesson.  Follow your first instinct.

All along I had been doing what I love to do and that is writing.  I attended home business seminars in hopes I would find that perfect business.  Not realizing that writing was the talent I needed to use in my own home business.  This was something that I did naturally and truly enjoyed.  I was so busy looking outside for my opportunity to start a home business.  I ignored what was already within me to succeed. I had been searching for a home business so long that I started writing things down every step of the way.  In doing this, I had enough information to write and self-publish three home business booklets, "How To Start A Home Business", "Tax Tips For Your Home Business", and "How To Develop A Business Plan For Your Home/Small Business". Little did I know there was a market for home business information.  Now, I've been doing some freelance writing for a few on-line magazines and home business sites and promoting my booklets on Mommy's@Work, my new website which debuted in January 1999.  One of my goals is to have the best home business resource place for work-at-home moms and dads to help them succeed in their own home businesses.  Most of all, I have chosen the right business for me and enjoying what I do.

I think most of us have been in a situation like the one above. With so many home business opportunities out there today, its hard to choose which one is going to work for you.  If you've decide a business opportunity is what you want to do, make sure its something you enjoy and within your talents and abilities.  When things get slow, you'll still want to do what you're doing.  Even if your not making a substantial amount of money doing it.
